Long after Wahmonie was abandoned, a dirt road was regularly graded and traveled through the center of the abandoned townsite. In 1952, the Nevada Test Site was founded in the desert surrounding Wahmonie, and in the early 1960s, the road was moved and paved to support construction in the vicinity. The "old main road" through the townsite was abandoned in about 1960, and as part of research on recovery of the townsite, Richard Hunter photographed it in 1978, looking downslope towards the southeast. The main part of the townsite is to the left. The perennial grasses in the road are Achnotherum hymenoides (Indian ricegrass) and A. speciosum (desert needlegrass). A few Ephedra nevadensis (Mormon tea) individuals are also present. (Richard Hunter) |
