The match is slightly to the left and forward of the original photograph, but the shrubs similar to both views are readily identifiable. Most of the shrubs in the midground are Coleogyne individuals that are about the same size, although one at center is noticeably larger. Perennial grasses, which were mostly Achnotherum hymenoides (Indian ricegrass) and A. speciosum (desert needlegrass), are dead, and their blackened root masses remain. Short-lived species such as perennial grasses had high mortality rates during the 1989 drought, whereas long-lived species survived with little apparent ill effects. (Robert H. Webb) |
