A washout has occurred in the intervening years, probably during heavy precipitation in January and February, 1993. Gullies now cross the former reservoir, forcing a re-routing of the dirt road. Sediment exposed in these gullies indicate that as few as 15 runoff events have occurred in the small drainages east of the railroad between 1906 and 1993. Many new Larrea individuals are present on the rail bed, and the persisting individuals are much larger than in 1981. The few Ambrosia individuals on the rail bed have died, as well as Larrea individuals that grew in the fine-grained sediments that that marked the small reservoir here. The mortality is probably drought-related. (Dominic Oldershaw) |
