Most of the plants visible in Coolidge’s view were still present in 1986 and looked remarkably similar. In particular, 23 individuals of Coleogyne, 4 Ephedra, and 1 Grayia persisted. New species appeared, in particular Eriogonum heermanii (Heerman’s buckwheat), which appears as a whitish shrub at left, and Achnotherum speciosum (desert needlegrass). (Raymond M. Turner)
