Two major land-use changes have occurred in between 1986 and 1998. Because of new extraction technology, large-scale mining resumed on the east side of Rhyolite. Huge tailings piles from the open-pit mine blanket the background of this view. The mountain at left center is being leveled by the mining operation. The foreground talus pile has not been revegetated in 82 years and is representative of the status of other talus piles around the townsite. Tourism has increased, but other than the well-maintained roads in the midground, this change is not obvious in the view. Because of the tourism, trampling in the recovering townsite is a greater factor in the course of its recovery than before. Several new structures, mostly trailers, are in the view, suggesting that more people now live in Rhyolite than in 1986. Several roads apparently were closed, because at least one (midground) appears to have increased vegetation in it. (Dominic Oldershaw)
