In September 1998, an extremely large flood generated by as much as 400 mm of rainfall damaged the Visitor’s Center and buildings at center, cut the entrance road, and deeply scoured the main wash through the foreground. Three washes converge at the right side of the view; the flood originated in the wash that comes from the hills on the left edge of the view. The vegetation in the valley appears denser with larger individuals, possibly in response to the relatively high precipitation between 1978 and 1999. None of the plants in the foreground of the 1978 view persist to 1999, indicating how short-lived Atriplex polycarpa is on xeric, bedrock slopes. (Dominic Oldershaw) |
