| On the basis of the position of the background mountains, the match is not exact; the camera position is too far to the left. Robert Webb appears in approximately the same position as a figure in 1907, standing next to a small concrete pad, the only remains of the small stamp mill. Despite the inexact match, several plants – apparently Ephedra nevadensis or E. funerea (Mormon tea) – persist in the 1985 view on the midground slopes on the left. The lack of significant recovery on the tailings pile is in sharp contrast with revegetation of the disturbed slopes and valley. Most tailings piles are not easily revegetated because of the coarse-textured material and, in many cases, chemical toxicity. Some plants have become established in the finer-grained sites on the tailings pile, typically in little gullies. Some small shrubs, primarily Hymenoclea salsola (cheesebush) and Ericameria cooperi (Cooper’s goldenbush) grow in the foreground. (Raymond M. Turner) | ||
