| Many of the foreground plants have persisted with the exception of most of the Achnotherum, which probably died as a result of the 1989 drought. Likewise, the herbaceous biomass is low despite high rainfall associated with the 1997-1998 El Niño winter storms. The Larrea individual has grown significantly, and longer-lived shrubs such as Larrea appear to have increased in the abandoned street. Soil compaction in abandoned streets like this one has decreased but is still significantly higher than undisturbed soil nearby. (Dominic Oldershaw) | ||
