The spring continues to supply water, only the users are rangers and tourists instead of miners. The main road through Emigrant Canyon, informally called the Wildrose Road because of its destination in the Panamint Mountains, is now paved and heavily used. Few tourists stop at this site, however, and the cleared areas have mostly recovered. For example, there is no remaining sign of the 5 (or more) tent buildings on the right side of the view. This type of young geomorphic surface – the bottom of an active wash – supports mainly short-lived plants that are adapted to disturbance from periodic flooding. (Dominic Oldershaw) |
