Grazing is now rare at Dove Springs Canyon, but the area is an off-road vehicle Open Area. Grazing probably ended when Dove Spring dried up, which may have been caused by construction of the Los Angeles Aqueduct across the canyon in the 1960s. The cessation of grazing, plus above-average rainfall in the last two decades of the 20th century, is the likely reason for the increased perennial vegetation on the hillslopes. The hillclimbs in this view are primarily used by motorcyclists. Gullies form in the hillclimbs during the occasionally intense rainfall, and the coarse but easily eroded soil is deposited in little alluvial fans such as the prominent one in the lower center of this view. The gullies are filled by soil displacement from subsequent traffic, only to be emptied again during storms. (Dominic Oldershaw)
