Seasonal sheep grazing has long been a traditional use of the western Mojave Desert. In the spring months, when desert annuals offer abundant grazing, sheep herders from the Central Valley trail their flocks to the mountains of western and central Nevada. Springs offer a needed water source, and one such source was Dove Spring, which was about 200 m to the right of this camera station. The vegetation is Larrea tridentata (creosote bush) with scattered Ambrosia dumosa (white bursage). Vegetation on the hillslope appears to have been heavily grazed before this photograph was taken because of the small size of individuals and distance between distinct shrubs. Compaction from animal hooves is also significant, particularly in areas like this that are near watering areas and are heavily used. (photographer unknown, courtesy of Roberta Starry) |
