Plant growth was high in 1978 because of high rainfall. As a result of the high precipitation, and possibly because grazing was decreasing, bottomland vegetation appears larger than at any previous time in the photo series. Annuals and possibly young perennial plants grow on hillslopes that previously were stripped and compacted. This growth is seasonal, and a subsequent drought combined with continued vehicle usage would probably eliminate these plants. A deep gully snakes up the hillslope at left center.(Robert H. Webb) |
