Beatty, Nevada, was built along the Amargosa River in 1905 because the abundant water nearby could supply the Bullfrog Mining District to the west. Beatty was a major station on the Las Vegas and Tonopah Railroad in about 1906. Dwarfed by its mining town neighbor, Rhyolite, until the mid-1910s, Beatty was the largest town within 100 km in the 1930s. This photograph evidently was taken to capture the spectacular sedimentary geology of the mountains to the east of town. (photographer unknown, courtesy of the Nevada Historical Society, Nye 529) |
