Because of its visibility from US 95, a main north-south route through southern Nevada, the millsite at Arista is visited relatively often. Vehicles still drive into the foreground of this view, creating continual disturbance. However, the margins of the area show signs of recovery. Both Larrea tridentata (creosote bush) and Ambrosia dumosa (white bursage) have become established in the compacted foreground area. The persisting Larrea individual is now very large, even for this typically sprawling shrub. Its size can be attributed to the low density of the species in the disturbed site, because the lack of competition allows the few plants to monopolize soil water. (Dominic Oldershaw)
